The 2560×1440 (QHD) resolution of the isn’t as sharp as a 4K screen, but this monitor is cheaper, and it’s just as color accurate as our top pick. It also has a nearly identical adjustable stand, three-year warranty, and dead-pixel policy, and it will work great with older computers or apps that can’t scale to 4K. Its USB-C ports don’t put out enough power to charge a laptop, and its default sRGB color preset has image-retention problems, but its Neutral color preset doesn’t have the same issues and is more than accurate enough for most people. Who this is for. If you have room for it on your desk, a 27-inch monitor is an ideal size. If you use lots of apps at once and have good eyesight, a 27-inch monitor fits a lot more information than smaller screens do. If you have poor eyesight, you can scale up the size of text and images and still have a usable amount of desktop space. Most people buying a new monitor for a computer or graphics card made in 2015 or later should buy a 4K monitor. They make text and images look much sharper, they’re not much more expensive than their non-4K counterparts, they’re much easier to set up and use than before, and operating systems and applications have (mostly) adapted to scale up to the higher resolution. Has even more picks for people who need larger, smaller, or higher-resolution screens. If you have an older computer that doesn’t support DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 2.0, or if you rely on one or more apps that you know don’t scale well on a 4K screen, you should consider a (also known as a Quad HD or QHD monitor) instead. These monitors aren’t as sharp as 4K screens, but they are often a little cheaper, and it’s still easy to find models with plenty of ports, excellent adjustable stands, and great picture quality. Neither type of 27-inch monitor is the best fit for everyone. ![]() Search Wirecutter For: Search Reviews for the real world Browse Close • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Browse Close • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •. Makes it easy to create a clean and simple photo book with image quality on a par with books almost twice as expensive. Page for page, Shutterfly’s images had higher resolution and fewer splotches, bars, and other printing irregularities that speckled the images of other photo books. It also offers a huge range of customization options, from decorative themes to pages of ready-made photo spreads if you want them—but they’re easy to ignore if you don’t. Unlike the software of the similarly priced Mixbook and Snapfish, Shutterfly’s app didn’t experience any glitches in the hours it took us to make a book. Our Shutterfly book was also delivered in pristine condition, neatly wrapped in plastic and shipped inside a sturdy cardboard box. At face value, Shutterfly can cost more than the competition, but there’s almost always an active 50 percent off coupon on any given week. If there’s not one when you go to check out, we recommend making the book and then waiting until you can get the coupon. Readers also like •. To learn what features are important in a photo book service, I researched 28 companies and eventually tested eight, compiling a mixture of images from high-resolution DSLRs and iPhones, as well as color and resolution test images to most directly compare the image quality of different books. Personal photo books filled with memories are wonderful, unique mementos of vacations and events that can be treasured for years to come. Designing a personal photo book isn't overly hard, either. Blurb BookWright's easy-to-use features allow anyone to publish custom photo books, magazines, and novels in either print or ebook format. I also showed the final photo books to a number of experts. The first, Shamus Clisset, works as a master printer at. He has made fine-art prints for numerous galleries and museums, including the MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. I also consulted with Michael Hession, head of photo and video at Wirecutter, and our designer Ryan Hines to get their thoughts on image quality, typefaces, and overall design. And I interviewed another kind of expert: my dad, Stephen Imbler. He makes photo books for all his vacations, music shows, and photoshoots for friends, as well as a yearly family photo album. He estimates he’s made over 150 photo books over the past 12 years using four different services, and he tried out some of the services we considered to see how they compared with his tried-and-true (Apple). Who this is for. If you want to create an album of your digital photos, a photo book service is absolutely the way to go. Digital photo books look much sleeker and more elegant than their DIY predecessors. They’re also much easier to replace in case the first gets damaged. Digital photo books can be customized to fit any occasion, such as a family trip, a baby book, or even a school yearbook. They also make great gifts for grandparents and family. And if you’re a photographer, photo books are a great way to curate your work in a book that can be reproduced for distribution. If you want to make a fancier book documenting a special event such as a wedding, consider upgrading to a layflat book, which has a special kind of binding that allows two-page spreads to lay completely flat without a crease in the middle. You might also consider choosing a more luxurious cover, such as leather or crushed silk, to match the occasion. If you have a collection of vintage photo albums or boxes of family photos sitting around, you might consider scanning those photos and upgrading to a digital photo book. Here are our recommendations for the. How we picked. ![]() Photo: Michael Hession We researched 28 online photo book services, looking for one that would allow you to create a customizable book with captions and multiple photos on one page. We eliminated services like Chatbooks or Montage that draw images right from your Instagram or Facebook and auto-arranges them into a book you can’t edit. And though we tested one book that offers Photoshop-like total control over the layout of your book, we dismissed any service that looked too technical or complex to use for someone with no editing experience. Many photo printing services offer frequent, deep discounts and promotions throughout the year, which made an accurate pricing comparison hard to do. Noting the existence of holiday sales, we can’t say for sure if one service will be cheaper than another at any given time. Labeled as build 7.1, the update brings about full support for the just-released OS X Yosemite, as well as a number of bug fixes and improvements. Among the improvements, Skype has made it easier for users to copy a link in a group chat, and leave conversations. Skype for Business 2015 (may also be branded Lync 2013) - available with Office 2013 Skype for Business on Mac - available with Mac OS X El Capitan and macOS Sierra Lync for Mac 2011 - available with Mac OS X Yosemite. It's not easy. Skype actively prevents opening additional instances using open -na Skype and /Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype in Terminal. You need to launch a Skype instance, then go to ~/Library/Application Support/Skype, and delete the files Skype.pid. Then open Terminal and execute one of the commands above (I recommend the open one). Remember: The Skype developers actively work toward preventing you from doing that, so some things might go terribly wrong if you do this. But, I was able to log into my account twice. No idea about anything else. I have done the following workaround to run multiple instances of Skype on facebook. Make sure you have more than one user created on Mac, if not then you can create one now. Open Terminal.app from Applications>utilites>terminal Type the following commands. $ su username Password. Bash-3.2$ Note: Replace with the name second user on you Mac Now you are logged into second user via terminal. All we need is to start Skype APP for the second user, which can be done by typing the following set of commands bash-3.2$ cd /Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS bash-3.2$./Skype To see it live you can watch video explaining this on my. Hope that helps. I recommend to use Daniel Beck method. Using sudo is asking you to run Skype as an administrator. If something happens to your Skype package like it was disassembled by some hacker, running as an administrator or super user is not a good idea. Deleting the.pid file actually works and has no problem. Skype runs by checking multiple instances by checking the.pid file under ~/Library/Application Support/Skype/Skype.pid (as the file). Also, if you're a developer, you might be wondering why port 80 is not working, that's because Skype is using it when calling your port 80 from localhost or using your IP v4 address. Skype somehow blocks it since it's running via administrator or super user account. The above works, though it won't allow you to run simultaneous account at the same time, same machine, same user account but that's fine, obviously. So to make up the command, this can be done by, • Click your Skype somehow in Dock or using Finder • open your terminal and type, 'cd ~/Library/Application Support/Skype' • remove the.pid file by, 'unlink Skype.pid' • run, in your terminal, 'open -nW '/Application/Skype.app' &' using the command '/Application/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype &' works too but if you close your terminal, the Skype too will exist, as the session will be hold by the current session of your terminal. So using 'open' command is perfect. Matthew Scharley provided the best answer. With his method, you keep the same account but separated settings for the 2 accounts, so auto-login will work fine. This is not the case with the.pid file delete method. If you're using the terminal, the following 2 aliases will help you start the 2 skype instances in any order: alias skype='open -n '/Applications/Skype.app' alias skype2='open -na '/Applications/Skype.app' --args -DataPath /Users/$(whoami)/Library/Application Support/Skype2' You can also create 2 automator scripts if you want to start these commands from spotlight. Now there is a new way: • Install FluidApp (search for it your self) • (Optional) Get a license from FluidApp if you want to run more than one fluid Skype Apps • Create a fluid app • URL: • Name: Skype@YourOrg • Open the newly created Skype@YourOrg app • (if you did 2) Preferences → Securities → Cookie Storage → Separate from Safari. This will allow you to create Skype@OtherOrg fluid apps. • Login to Skype, now you can start to chat • If you want A/V conference, flow the instruction install Skype for Web plugin. Since the latest Skype update (8.12.0.14) I had to merge 3 steps from others users to work (I don't know if is the best solution because the steps are kind of tricky (special the last one) but.it is working. If you have/know a better solution please say) • Create Application from Script Editor (steps ) but you must change the content to the command line above (from ) do shell script 'sudo /Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype /secondary' (also you can close the script application after skype launch) tell application 'Application_Script_Editor_Name' quit end tell • To remove the error ' sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified' error?' , you must grant the user to use the application without prompting for the password (from ) sudo visudo (add at the end but replace 'add_your_username') 'add_your_username' ALL = NOPASSWD: /Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype /secondary • (Optional) Add as Startup Item System Preferences > User & Groups > Login Items tab > + (plus) button. MrAtariMac Replacement for Playback I was using Playback for a few years and was very happy with it. But then I had to reinstall it and it wouldn’t accept my credentials because it needs to ‘connect’ to the developer for verification and they either don’t support it anymore or are out of business. I looked at other products that were clunky or wanted annual fees for support. I paid for FireStream (a risk since there is no trial period), but it works just fine. I would prefer to still be using Playback because I really liked its interface, but this works fine and I’m glad I found it. I’ve used smart TVs to access my media, but my main TV is a Sony Bravia that never has been able to recognize movies. Went round and round with Sony and they had no solution. And for the last couple of years it shows an error if I try to do a software update. My other TVs don’t have a problem. So for the Sony Bravia I have a Roku connected and its media player has no problem with music, photos, or movies. So FireStream is a great Playback replacement for me and fairly simple to set up. As such, 5 stars! MrAtariMac Replacement for Playback I was using Playback for a few years and was very happy with it. Devices running Windows (and Android) are vastly more likely to get hit with a malware infestation than Macs, simply because the macOS operating system is better at maintaining security. But less likely doesn't mean impossible; Macs do get hit with ransomware, Trojans, and other types of malware. Smart Mac users don't rely strictly on the OS. They install a macOS-centric antivirus utility. We've put a collection of such tools under serious scrutiny, to help you choose the one that's best for your macOS devices. As with, the most common price is just under $40 per year for a single license. ProtectWorks is unusual in that a single $29.95 payment lets you protect all the Macs in your household, with no subscription needed. McAfee goes beyond that, with a $59.99 per year subscription that protects all your Macs, PCs, Android, and iOS devices. With Sophos Home Premium, $50 per year lets you insall and remotely manage protection on 10 Macs or PCs. User reviews can be helpful, as long as you discard the very best and very worst of them. But actual test results performed by an independent lab give you more reliable information. Two large labs include antivirus products in their testing, and all but four of the products in this roundup received certification from at least one of them. Malwarebytes declines to be tested, on the basis that its unusual detection mechanism isn't compatible with current testing methods. And the labs didn't choose to include ClamXAV, McAfee, or ProtectWorks. The researchers at evaluate Mac antivirus products on three criteria: protection, performance, and usability. A product can earn up to six points for each. Protection against malware protection is essential, of course, as is a low impact on performance. A high usability score reflects a small number of false positives, legitimate programs and websites identified as dangerous. Several products achieved a perfect 18 points, all six points for all three criteria. F-Secure Safe took the lowest score in the most recent test. You won't find a Mac-specific review of this product, as it's a cross-platform suite that protects Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS devices. In the macOS malware test by, almost every charted product scored at least 99 percent, and a couple managed a perfect 100 percent. Webroot stumbled just a bit, with 96.9 percent protection. This lab, too, included a test using malware aimed at Windows. Yes, these samples can't affect a computer running macOS, but they could conceivably escape to Windows machines on the network.
